Most modern beds consist of a mattress on a bed frame, with the mattress resting either on a solid base, often wooden slats, or a sprung base. Most beds have a headboard for resting against, with others also having side rails and footboards. Bed sizes vary around the world. The "double" size is standard among English speaking countries, based on the imperial measurement of 4 ft 6 in by 6 ft 3 in (137 cm x 190 cm), the sizes for other bed types tend to vary. The "king" size based on the imperial measurement of 5 ft by 6 ft 6 in (150 cm x 195 cm) A canopy bed is a decorative bed similar to a four-poster bed. The canopy bed came into being more for utilitarian means rather than for extravagance or decadence. The earliest incarnations were beds of common people seeking shelter beyond that of the thatch roof. Canopy beds with curtains that could completely enclose the bed were used by lords and noblemen in medieval Europe for warmth and privacy, as their attendants often slept in the same room. Until the 16th century, these beds, even those of the nobles, were fairly plain and understated. During this period, carved work on the headboard and posts became popular and more ornate canopy beds followed. A sleigh bed is a style of bed with curved or scrolled foot and headboards, thus resembling a sled or sleigh. Often made of mahogany the sleigh bed is a result of the French and American Empire period of the early 19th century. The Empire style drew its inspiration from the empires of ancient Rome and Greece. French beds faithfully reproduces designs of the Louis XV and XVI period and often incorporate elaborate carving and gilt detail. Rattan is also a popular design element. Today minimalism styles and influences in painting and sculpture have found their way into furniture design, as opposed to the more elaborate designs found in the Victorian Era. Traditional beds are styled after the Arts & Crafts era of furniture. They have the traditional look and feel of that early mission style furniture but in the design of a platform bed. Transitional style platform bed styles often reflect a more modern look but using traditional styling techniques to accent delicate modern scroll work contained within the headboard.
